🍄 The New Health Club #16 - Donick Cary: Yes, Deepak Chopra and Sting love a good trip.

We are going full entertainment and Netflix here! I talk to Donick Cary, the director of the Netflix movie called “Have a good trip”. Cary interviewed Sting, Deepak Chopra, Rosie Perez, Ben Stiller, Anthony Bourdain, Cary Fisher and Sarah Silverman about their psychedelic trips and how their lives and minds changed after their psychedelic experience. For good. Donick Cary gets the movie right, since he is a big shot Hollywood writer: he worked as the head writer at Late Night with David Letterman, he wrote for The Simpsons, Parks and Recreation, HBO’s Silicon Valley. Carys uses a specific kind of humour, since he is trained in his writing for the Simpsons and Letterman. So how do you talk psychedelics with celebrities and make it entertaining and not an ego driven trip bragging? And will celebrities talking about this change the public opinion about these new tools? Well, if humour is part of the equation, “people will listen” says Cary. Or, as Deepak Chopra says “Life a trip,” and psychedelics might help to improve your ride.

This is a long overdue podcast, but I am thrilled to announce we have the amazing Rosalind Watts on the show next week. She is the Clinical Lead at Imperial College London’s Centre for Psychedelic Research and a fantastic scientist (If you didn’t already know, The Imperial College London has one of the most important psychedelic research centres in the world).

Oh, and if you are interested in taking part in MQ Mental Health's research studies into wellness and the effects of covid19, you can browse through their online survey opportunities here. (Imperial College London is involved).

This week, we’re going full entertainment and Netflix, yes! We talk to Donick Cary, the director of the new Netflix movie "Have A Good Trip" - available now!

In the film, Donick interviews Sting, Deepak Chopra, Rosie Perez, Ben Stiller, Anthony Bourdain, Carrie Fisher, Sarah Silverman and more. And yes, about their psychedelic trips and how the experiences influenced their lives and minds for good. Spoiler: after seeing the movie, I wanted to listen to Sting talking psychedelics for the rest of my life, as Sting’s voice evokes a Shakespearean drama - thank God for sophisticated British storytellers!

Since Donick Cary’s a big shot Hollywood writer - having written for Letterman, The Simpsons, Parks and Rec, Silicon Valley etc - he has a very specific kind of humour... And it certainly hits the mark in this film.

So how does one talk psychedelics with celebrities and make it entertaining and prevent it from descending into ego-driven trip bragging? And will celebrities openly discussing psychedelics change the public perspective on using them as tools for personal growth?

These are the questions… And if humour is part of the equation, “people will listen” says Donick. Or, as Deepak Chopra says “Life is a trip and psychedelics might improve the ride.”

THE NEW HEALTH CLUB
Welcome to New Health Club podcast. This is where the conversation around the new age of mental wellness begins. I think, that psychedelics will play a big part in this and there is a lot of scientific research happening, plus an industry growing around the topic, as we speak.
But what are LSD, magic mushrooms, psilocybin and MDMA or Ketamine exactly doing for our mental health and personal progress in the future? On the “New Health Club Podcast” I talk to real innovators, thought leaders and disrupters from the emerging new world of psychedelics and mental wellness.
